Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Scandola Nature Reserve is one of Corsica’s natural treasures. Accessible only by sea, it can be explored on an unforgettable boat trip. And Galéria is the closest departure port. Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit.

What is the Scandola Nature Reserve?
Established in 1975 and listed by UNESCO, the Scandola Nature Reserve stretches from the Gulf of Galéria to the Gulf of Girolata. It is both a marine and terrestrial nature reserve, featuring red porphyry cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, sea caves, coves inaccessible on foot and protected wildlife, including ospreys, European shags and groupers. The site can only be visited by boat, in compliance with strict regulations.
Why depart from Galéria?
Most visitors set off from Calvi, Porto or Ajaccio, which means a long crossing. From the small port of Galéria, Scandola is only a few minutes away by boat: you spend more time exploring the reserve and less time travelling, aboard smaller boats. This is one of the great advantages of staying in Galéria. And with Camping A Torra, located at the entrance to the village, you are just 5 minutes from the port.
Boat trips: what will you see?
Trips generally last between 2 and 3 hours. Highlights include Scandola’s red cliffs, sea caves, the fishing village of Girolata (accessible only by sea or on foot) and often a swimming stop in a secluded cove. Local guides provide fascinating insights into the area’s geology and wildlife.
Prices and bookings
Prices vary depending on the operator and trip duration: expect to pay between €40 and €70 per adult, with reduced prices for children. During the high season, book in advance, as places fill up quickly. Several companies operate directly from Galéria harbour.
Practical tips
- Best time to visit: May to September, when the sea is generally calmer in the morning.
- What to bring: sunscreen, a hat, water, swimwear and a windbreaker.
- Seasickness: consider bringing medication if you are prone to motion sickness.
- Respect the reserve: swimming and navigation are regulated, so always follow your guide’s instructions.
